Baby Bunny

7 min read

Hi again folks. It has been another long time since I updated. But this journal is not going to be a rambling one like last time.

I am taking care of a baby Cotton Tail. I hope to release it in about 2 to 3 weeks. Here is the story how I adopted the little Spunky bunny.

This all started on Wednesday 7/24/13.

Yesterday, Mom told me that Maya was chasing some baby bunnies. Then I took Maya out just before I went to church. Maya found one of the baby bunnies and she chased it. The little fella got angry and started to lunge at Maya. That cracked me up. This little bunny that can fit in the palm of my hand trying to make Maya back off. I of course.

This morning when I took Maya out we found two babies huddled together. Maya tried to get them to run but they don't move. Maya got all concerned because her friends were not moving. I had to drag her to another part of the yard so she would go potty.

After she went potty, we went back and there was one bunny (3rd) ran away from us. It went over to the building and disappeared. I then took Maya into the apartment (house). I got some toast and coffee (not enough time to make eggs) and then got ready for work.

Came home and Mom was looking for the one bunny. Then she saw me and told me about the babies being dead and the one that was still running around. I went in and grab a small box. I didn't want to see the little spunky bunny dead out in the yard like its siblings. So I caught Spunky and had to wait until he/she calmed down so I could bring her across the road to home. Asked my neighbor is she would take the baby bunny. But she could not do that because she could guarantee that her cats wouldn't get to it. She gave me her dog carrier to put him in until I could buy a smaller cage.

Poor thing was scared and didn't move much after I place it in the carrier. Mom went to get some carrots and lettuce. The baby is old enough to eat that. After I had dinner, I went to PetSmart to get the smaller cage with bedding and food (mixed with some stuff for their systems). I set up the cage and opened the door. I went out to get Spunky but decided I didn't want to do so bare handed. I got one of my winter gloves. Good thing I did. Every time I reached for the bunny, it tried to bite me. Finally got him back in the little box and kept my hand over Spunky. Didn't want him/her to jump out and land on the concrete slab that is my balcony. (I am going to call Spunky he from here on out. It is just to annoying to keep saying he/she.) He got use to his new temporary home and sat in the food bowl. Mom had me put the tiny pieces of carrot and lettuce in the cage as well.

Mom moved stuff off the table (kitchen) sow we can put the cage up there out of Maya's reach. She is very excited every time it moves. Anyway, Spunky ate some of the lettuce and carrots but dumped most of it to the bottom of the cage. I am not happy with the water bottle that came with the cage. It says it was to be "leak proof" but it has done nothing but leak. I may have to get a different one if it seems to be getting the cage too wet for the bunny.

So I go to bed tonight and hope that Spunky is doing well in the morning.

Edit: I have posted photos of Baby Bunny at my website www.flowerofgracephotographs.c…;
I will upload here as well but please do not use without my permission.

Update 7/30/13

Well Baby Bunny (name did not stick and I don't really want to get to attached) is doing well. Mom wants to leave him outside overnight since it will be a nice evening. I am kind of iffy but I will be more willing once I check the temp later. Baby Bunny is funny because it is now burrowing in the paper bedding. It gets scared and it disappears like a shot. Maya has tried to catch a glimpse of Baby Bunny but snap it is hiding in the bedding.

Baby Bunny is eating lettuce and carrots. I want to start introducing grass and other plants to it before releasing it. I am afraid that if it continues to eat the lettuce and carrots that it will not survive in the wild. It is okay for a little while to bolster Baby Bunny up but it is not the natural food stuffs for cottontails. I also have some rabbit food which I fill every so often. I really don't want Baby Bunny to get use to that stuff. I am thinking of releasing Baby Bunny by weeks end (weather permitting for me) or next Tuesday or Thursday. Next Thursday will be two weeks since I took it in.

I just realized that I haven't updated my journal since mid-December. Boy that is rather strange.

Today, it is snowing but not really laying on the grace and streets at this time. The little table that is outside my sliding glass window is starting to get covered.
And if you thought this journal was going to be something amazing...sorry...I am going totally random today.

So I am watching "Yu-Gi-Oh: Zexal" and kind of enjoying it. Then It will be some old black and white cowboy drama "Wagon Train". Yep, I am totally into cowboy dramas.
But they have to be older and have some kind of story behind it.

And the snow is coming down in bigger flakes. Wow! it is beautiful. And it is starting to cover the grass.

Just poured my second cup of Joe. And my poor dog is hiding in the hallway because of the snow. She has always been that way for as long as I can remember.

Oh....Oh...and I am totally stuck on playing Pirates101. If you play and would like to be my friend, let me know in a private message. I will get a code you can use to be my friend.
My character is called Stout Jenna Xavier. Currently I am at lever 14 and have 7 nautical experience. I love teaming up and beating the enemy. I also have an extensive crew.
So, if you feel inclined and have read into this part, please let me know if you play the game.

Snow is still in big flakes and laying thickly on the little table. The grass is not totally covered yet but give it a little more time.

Well, I have to do school work....almost over for the quarter.

Did I tell you that I am stuck on Pirates101. And I am fighting mechanical men. Very interesting! I am totally enjoying the interaction with other players.

But I do need to get to my homework so I will end this now. I will no longer bore you to death about snow and Pirates101.

I think I will post some of my photos from Pirates101. Ok so I can't stop talking about the game.

Found out at work today about the shooting in a small town in Connecticut. At the time there were 18 dead (children and adults).

When I got home from work today the number of children dead was 20 with 6 adults at the school. A person (the shooters mother) was
dead at her home. Finally, the shooter himself was dead of self inflected wounds.

I cannot look at the photos of the scenes without wanting to cry. My heart breaks for all those who are affected. I was watching the extended
news coverage and thinking that I would just go there and give those hurting a hug and a shoulder to cry on. No, I would say nothing because
I can say nothing that will help the grief. All I would do is hug them and hold them for as long as they wanted.

My prayers are with the families that lost loved ones.

I am very active this past week. I guess I need a storm or something to write more than one journal.

Well I just wanted to let y'all know that another storm is heading to the Northeast. This time it won't be quite as strong as Sandy. However, the damage already done,
this storm will just compound some of the damage.

Here is a link about the new storm that is threatening the Northeast: www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11…

Hey everyone! Yeah, I know I just gave you a coronary by posting another journal so quickly.  But I am in need of posting!

So this probably going to be short.

So Sandy ripped through the Philadelphia area as a major Wind storm. I think other areas go all the rain. Since we had a lot of
wind many people are out of electricity. The power went out and some people are still out. My apartment building was an island
of darkness in a sea of light late Tuesday night all the way until late Thursday night.

At the moment the lights went on, my nephew cried out "Ah". And in her room, mom said, "I can see it!" I was dozing and the yelling
woke me up to "bright light" and went out on my balcony. Most of my neighbors came out of their apartments and we all cheered.

So, we are grateful to have electricity. But I feel for those who are still without. I am praying they all get their power restored.

I just hope they are wrong about the next weather system coming up the coast. As Brian Williams just said on "Nightly News" that would be
adding insult to injury.

Praying for everyone still feeling Sandy's wrath.
